2016 Wellington Dressage Winter Season Schedule

Written by Betsy LaBelle - In Dressage - Thursday, January 7, 2016

This exciting Olympic year offers close to $700,000 in prize money during Wellington’s 12-week winter season of competitions at the upcoming Adequan® Global Dressage Festival. This Festival is the world's largest international and national dressage circuit featuring 7 CDIs, including four CDI-Ws, one 4*, one 5* and a CDIO Nations Cup which is a part of the FEI Nations Cup Series, as well as weekly U.S. National events.

Show Manager Thomas Baur said, “There’s been increasing interest in coming here to Wellington, Florida for the seven CDIs as the athletes are trying to qualify for either a team slot or individual spot in the Olympics. There will be a rider from Asia and we’ll have a lot more Europeans and, for the first time, we’ll have a rider from Africa. It’s an Olympic year and everyone wants to be there in Rio.”

Also a World Cup year, the FEI will be awarding two slots only to North America. The 2016 Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage Finals will be held in Goteborg (SWE) March 23 – 28, 2016.

It is expected to be a thrilling week for the Diamante Farms 5* because it will grant bonus points for getting onto the FEI World Dressage Ranking List and there will also be a 3* that same week. L-R (Thomas Baur, Janne Rumbough, Meg Krueger, Allyn Mann)

As the winter competitions get closer and closer, the excitement is building as the dressage community speculates on which horse a rider will choose to g o for those points because only one horse per rider is allowed to enter the 5* and several riders have two horses developed for this level.

The Palm Beach Derby will be hosting a Rider Derby to include an exchange of horses. This year, a pre-ride competition will take place at Prix St. Georges with riders who plan to donate their horses to four riders for a final ride-off. Three horses will be selected from this $5,000 prize money class. One or two days after the PSG class, two riders will ride one horse and two riders will ride the next horse. Whichever two riders score the highest will then ride the third horse to determine the winner. Undoubtedly, it will be an extremely exciting class to watch because the riders have less than 5 minutes to get to know and partner with these horses.

The Florida International Youth Dressage Festival is sure to be an exhilarating event where youth ride in the international arena all week. It gives young riders a chance to compete in the same highly charged atmosphere as world class, top competitors.

And the Stillpoint Farm Nations Cup CDIO will still include Large Tour and Small Tour Team combinations made up of many different countries and federations. It's an exciting week to watch the rider strategy and teamwork.
